Some of the features of E Ink include:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Wide viewing angle<\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Readable in sunlight<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Holds image without power drain<\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Legible under most lighting conditions<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Lightweight<\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Thin (~1 mm)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Easily scaled to large sizes<\/td>\n<td rowspan=\"1\" colspan=\"1\">\u00b7 Supports curved designs<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>This is just another example of how fast the world of technology is changing these days<strong>.<\/strong> I first <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wired\/archive\/5.01\/negroponte.html\">read <\/a> about e ink in 1997when it was a research project at MIT, somehow missed E Ink\u2019s beta in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wired\/archive\/7.12\/tools.html?pg=3\">1999 <\/a>, and noted that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wired\/archive\/8.08\/epapers.html\">IBM <\/a> was in the race in 2000<strong>.<\/strong> Although I thought it was exciting technology, somehow it seemed like Star Wars stuff, a revolution that was still a ways off<strong>.<\/strong> But these days it only takes five years to get a technology from lab to revolution<strong>.<\/strong> And revolution it will be, for the sign, computer display, publishing, advertising, labeling, and who knows what other industries<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But wait<strong>!<\/strong> E Ink may be exciting for output, but there\u2019s an even bigger paper revolution growing one the input side: paper and pen<strong>.<\/strong> Mobile phone company Ericsson and startup Anoto are planning to release a pen that, when combined with paper that\u2019s been specially treated (but cheap enough to be ubiquitous), forms a wireless text input system<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bluetooth-enabled pen will enable you to scribble a note and check a special box on the page to fax or email your creation<strong>.<\/strong> Anoto, whose name is taken from the Latin annoto, meaning &#8220;I scribble,&#8221; could totally eclipse Bill Gates\u2019 latest planned product: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.key3media.com\/comdex\/fall2000\/daily\/webcasts\/index.html\">Tablet PC <\/a>, a luggable portable computer with advanced handwriting recognition<strong>.<\/strong> Gates unveiled the product at Comdex in November and, in a shocking victory for hype, its oh-so-20th-century technology beat out Anoto for Best of Show (insert <a href=\"http:\/\/www.talkcity.com\/transcripts\/WarnerBros\/10-19-2000.1-1.htmpl\">Fred Willard <\/a> joke here<strong>.<\/strong>)<\/p>\n<p>This project is so ambitious and so potentially life-altering, that I had to check the article twice and verify it from other sources, especially after noting it\u2019s from the April, 2001 Wired issue<strong>.<\/strong> I recommend you read the whole thing to get Steve Steinberg\u2019s explanation of the virtual map that makes the pen work<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So if your business uses paper, and I know mine does, you should keep an eye on these new developments in one of mankind\u2019s oldest communications technologies<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/wired\/archive\/9.04\/anoto.html?pg=1&amp;topic=&amp;topic_set=\">Wired <\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Briefly Noted<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Universal Description, Discovery and Integration (UDDI) Business Registry is now <a href=\"http:\/\/news.cnet.com\/news\/0-1003-200-5794106.html\">operational <\/a>, hosted at both Microsoft and IBM<strong>.<\/strong> Ariba pulled its promise to also host, but HP looks like it will step in<strong>.<\/strong> I profiled the effort in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratvantage.com\/news\/112000.htm\">November <\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>LoudCloud, the Marc Andreessen startup with the \u2018nads to brave the current IPO market is already on hard times, cutting 20 percent of their staff<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>A little late for the last election, but check out <a href=\"http:\/\/www.publius.com\/\">Publius <\/a>, a site that assembles a customized online version of Michigan voters\u2019 ballots<strong>.<\/strong> You can\u2019t vote with it, but the ballot does contain links to all the candidates\u2019 Web sites so you can research them<strong>.<\/strong> Try it with the name John Doe.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratvantage.com\/news\/mikestake.htm\">Return <\/a> to Mike\u2019s Take<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Evernote: StratVantage Consulting, LLC &#8212;
