04\/11\/01<\/h1>\n<h2>Confidence in B2B Exchanges Flows<\/h2>\n<p>Well if you\u2019re not confused about the B2B exchange marketplace, you\u2019re not paying attention<strong>.<\/strong> The March issue of manufacturing-oriented magazine, Start, quotes Jupiter Research as saying independent-sponsored marketplaces (ISMs) are gaining speed<strong>.<\/strong> ISMs, which I call Captive Exchanges, are business-to-business groups created by industry leaders<strong>.<\/strong> Jupiter says they are moving online faster, and enabling business operations sooner than expected<strong>.<\/strong> \u201cMore than 41% of 58 ISMs already have the ability to conduct business online, and another 33% were speculated to have launched by the end of 2000,\u201d the magazine said<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the last edition of StratVantage News Summary, I reported Ariba\u2019s gloomy prediction that all public exchanges were doomed<strong>.<\/strong> This was a particularly interesting statement, considering that Ariba\u2019s stock is floundering, and statements of doom and gloom won\u2019t do anything to enhance its price<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So I guess, when you look at it, Jupiter\u2019s statement really says nothing about the viability of the online exchange, just that they\u2019re really good at spending venture capital getting to market<strong>.<\/strong> And also good at getting industry analysts to write favorable analyses, it would appear<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the same issue, Start quotes AMR Research regarding consortium trading exchanges (CTEs)<strong>.<\/strong> CTEs face ten trouble spots:<\/p>\n<table>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\u00b7 premature promises of functionality<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\n<ul>\n<li>long delays in the delivery of collaborative commerce applications<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\u00b7 lack of consensus about where functionality should reside<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\n<ul>\n<li>cost to integrate back-end systems<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\u00b7 need to budget for the total cost of the exchange<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\n<ul>\n<li>supplier recruitment, participation and integration<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\u00b7 competition among the best-of-breed vendors<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\n<ul>\n<li>immaturity of standards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\u00b7 marketplace-to-marketplace integration<\/td>\n<td colspan=\"1\" rowspan=\"1\">\n<ul>\n<li>political infighting<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/table>\n<p>Other than that, they face clear sailing<strong>!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These varying viewpoints underscore the importance of businesses formulating a solid business case before getting involved in B2B exchanges<strong>.<\/strong> Concentrating on bringing efficiency to your own supply chain is likely to be more fruitful in the short run<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.startmagazine.com\/v5n3\/v5n3019.asp\">Start Magazine <\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Gratuitous Fun<\/h2>\n<p>OK, this has nothing to do with business or
