As a shareholder of the now-defunct eToys, I\u2019m a little disappointed<strong>.<\/strong> eToys had a tremendous brand and seemed like a survivor<strong>.<\/strong> However, the downturn in B2C eCommerce and a dismal Christmas performance shot them down<strong>.<\/strong><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.latimes.com\/business\/cutting\/techwr\/20010517\/tCB00V7325.html?ref=dn\">LA Times <\/a><\/li>\n<li>Who knows what will happen in the area of mobile commerce, or &quot;m-commerce&quot;<strong>?<\/strong> Nobody, really, but that doesn\u2019t stop the pundits from making projections<strong>.<\/strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/analysis\/wireless\/20010518_wireless.html?ref=dn\">eMarketer <\/a> presents a roundup of current thinking<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.instat.com\/pr\/2001\/mm0106bw_pr.htm\">Cahners In-Stat Group <\/a> predicts that almost 1 billion Bluetooth products will ship in 2005.However, Forrester<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nua.ie\/surveys\/index.cgi?f=VS&amp;art_id=905356763&amp;rel=true\"> predicts <\/a> that Europeans will be slow to adopt mobile payment systems until after 2005<strong>.<\/strong> And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nua.ie\/surveys\/index.cgi?f=VS&amp;art_id=905356744&amp;rel=true\">AT Kearney <\/a> says interest in mobile shopping is falling off<strong>.<\/strong> In June 2000, 32 percent of mobile phone users in Asia, Europe, and the US said they would buy products or services from wireless retailers<strong>.<\/strong> Now, only 12 percent remain interested.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.emarketer.com\/analysis\/ecommerce_b2b\/20010518_b2b.html?ref=dn\">eMarketer <\/a> also reports on trading volumes on online exchanges<strong>.<\/strong> For example, almost 11 percent of the cattle sold in Q1 were sold online<strong>.<\/strong> Moo.<\/li>\n<li>The US moratorium on Internet taxation ends in October<strong>.<\/strong> There have already been some rumblings from the states about taxing online purchases<strong>.<\/strong> So naturally Congress appointed a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.business2.com\/ebusiness\/2001\/05\/netaxes.htm\">commission <\/a> to look into the matter<strong>.<\/strong> Oddly, that didn\u2019t help. But if Internet purchases are to be taxed, something must be done about the 7,500 tax jurisdictions in the US<strong>.<\/strong> Otherwise it\u2019ll be mayhem for online retailers<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.neulevel.com\/\">NeuLevel <\/a>, the domain name registrar in control of the new .biz domain, has announced a three-step process for beginning registrations<strong>.<\/strong> Trademark owners can start the registration process today and have until July 9 to try to reserve their <em>trademark.biz<\/em> name<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>The American Arbitration Association (AAA) has released its \u201cB2B E-Commerce Readiness Study<strong>.<\/strong>\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/home.strategy.com\/\/news\/reports_fullstory.asp?fstoryID=D93D7B98-6C0C-4040-A0DF-680868A42777\">survey <\/a> of 100 senior executives at Fortune 1000 companies found that more than 70 percent of those surveyed have already moved part of their supply chain online and a like number expect to complete building their B2B e-commerce supply chain within the next two years<strong>.<\/strong> This is a rather small sample, so I wonder how representative it is<strong>.<\/strong> Still, the study represents a tremendous vote of confidence in B2B eCommerce<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Spreichen zie Web? US-based English-speakers are already the minority on the Web<strong>.<\/strong> This means businesses need to get serious about globalizing their Web sites<strong>.<\/strong> An Aberdeen Group <a href=\"https:\/\/home.strategy.com\/\/news\/reports_fullstory.asp?fstoryID=89BFD487-3864-49FB-B922-7FE38D6ECE64\">report <\/a> states that by the end of 2000, fewer than 35 percent of Web users were US citizens and only 48 percent of total users were English-speaking<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.deliverypoint.co.uk\/consumer.htm\">DeliveryPoint <\/a> has created a solution for Internet retailers of hard goods and groceries: a pass-through refrigerator accessible from outside the home and secured via electronic codes customized to the delivery<strong>.<\/strong> This is a really great idea, but is a little pricey at this point: \u20a47000<strong>.<\/strong> The unit has freezer, refrigerator and ambient temperature compartments<strong>.<\/strong> The delivery person has a one-use-only code to open the unit, and the consumer can open it from the inside to retrieve the purchases<strong>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Can\u2019t Get Enough of ME<strong>?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In the unlikely event that you want more of my opinions, I\u2019ve started a Weblog<strong>.<\/strong> It\u2019s the fashionable thing for pundits to do, and I\u2019m doing it too<strong>.<\/strong> A Weblog is a datestamped collection of somewhat random thoughts and ideas assembled on a Web page<strong>.<\/strong> If you\u2019d like to subject the world to your thoughts, as I do, you can create your own Weblog<strong>.<\/strong> You need to have a Web site that allows you FTP access, and the free software from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.blogger.com\/\">www.blogger.com <\/a><strong>.<\/strong> This allows you to right click on a Web page and append your pithy thoughts to your Weblog<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve dubbed my Weblog entries \u201cStratlets\u201d, and they are available at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stratvantage.com\/stratlets\/\">www.stratvantage.com\/stratlets\/ <\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Let me know what you think.
