Israeli startup vTrails has developed a patent-pending
technology for P2P video distribution called Full Duplex Packet Cascading
(FDPC). Their solution consists of a client-installed driver that works with
the popular streaming media clients from Real Networks, Microsoft, and Apple,
the FDPC router, called VT Cast, and, for even better performance, one or more
VT Edge servers. The client installs the driver, and requests a video clip. The
VT Cast server analyzes user requests using a proprietary algorithm and
arranges the users into hierarchical trees. It then receives a single stream
from the originating media server and sends it to only a few top-of-the-tree
users, whose machines redistribute the stream to other requestors who are
nearby, network-wise. If clients desire to increase quality of service and
reliability, vTrails can deploy VT Edge servers, which accept a single stream
from VT Cast and parcel it out locally.
